What Influences How You See Your World?
As a geographer, it intrigues me to know that even in the same place, people with different backgrounds and cultures will often make different decisions.
What drives those decisions? Is it the stories they grew up with? Or the stories they tell themselves? Do they understand how their history and their environment are shaping their thoughts, actions and choices? Are they aware of how their actions are shaping their environment and impacting other regions and other people?
We live in a diverse world that is always changing. However, change doesn’t happen at the same rate and in the same way everywhere. Landforms, climates, flora, fauna and other resources differ.
People have much in common; but we are different as well. We have different histories, traditions and ideologies. Each of us adapts at different rates and in different ways to the changes around us.
Place matters; but so does our history and culture, our individual and collective mindsets and values. In short, our attitudes, choices and actions matter; and they matter over time and space.
While these differences can cause conflicts, they can also enlighten us. Teach us to look at the world in a different way. Giving us a broader vision to see solutions that would not have been possible if everywhere looked the same and everyone thought the same way.
